How Do I Change My Login Name on Windows 7?

Published in Windows 2 mins read

You can't directly change your login name on Windows 7. However, you can create a new user account with the desired name and then transfer your personal files and settings to the new account. Here's how:

Creating a New User Account

  1. Open User Accounts: Go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety > User Accounts.
  2. Create a New Account: Click on Create a new account.
  3. Choose Account Type: Select Administrator for full access or Standard for limited access.
  4. Enter Username: Type your desired username and follow the prompts.

Transferring Files and Settings

  1. Copy Files: Manually copy your important files from the old account's Documents, Pictures, Music, and Downloads folders to the new account's corresponding folders.
  2. Transfer Settings: You can try using a third-party tool to transfer settings, but this might not work perfectly.

Deleting the Old Account

  1. Open User Accounts: Go to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts and Family Safety > User Accounts.
  2. Manage Accounts: Click on Manage another account.
  3. Delete Account: Select your old account and click Delete the account.

Remember to back up your important files before making any changes.
