How Do I Change the Administrator Name in Windows Server 2016?

Published in Windows Server 2 mins read

You can't directly change the "Administrator" account name in Windows Server 2016. However, you can rename the account by creating a new administrator account with a different name and then disabling the built-in "Administrator" account.

Here's how to do it:

1. Create a New Administrator Account

  • Open Server Manager.
  • Navigate to Tools > Local Users and Groups.
  • Right-click on Users and select New User.
  • Enter a User name and Password for the new administrator account.
  • Check the Administrator box to grant administrator privileges.
  • Click Create.

2. Disable the Built-in "Administrator" Account

  • In Local Users and Groups, navigate to Users.
  • Right-click on the Administrator account and select Properties.
  • Go to the Account tab.
  • Under Account options, check the Account is disabled box.
  • Click Apply and then OK.

Now you have a new administrator account with your desired name, and the original "Administrator" account is disabled.

3. Log in with the New Administrator Account

  • Restart your server.
  • Log in using the new administrator account you created.

Note: This process will not change the name of the built-in "Administrator" account, but it will disable it and allow you to use your new account with full administrative privileges.
