How Do I Close Desktops on Windows 11?

Published in Windows 11 2 mins read

You can't directly close desktops on Windows 11, as they are virtual spaces that are part of the operating system. However, you can switch between them or close all open windows within a specific desktop.

Switching Between Desktops

To switch between desktops, you can:

  • Use the Task View button: Click the Task View button (a square with four squares inside) on the taskbar to see all your open desktops and switch between them.
  • Use the keyboard shortcut: Press Alt + Tab to cycle through your open windows and desktops. You can hold down the Alt key and repeatedly press Tab to view all your desktops.
  • Use the mouse wheel: If you have multiple desktops open, you can scroll through them using the mouse wheel.

Closing All Windows on a Desktop

To close all open windows on a specific desktop, you can:

  • Close each window individually: Click the close button (X) in the top-right corner of each window.
  • Use the keyboard shortcut: Press Ctrl + Shift + W to close all open windows on the current desktop.

Remember that closing all windows on a desktop doesn't delete the desktop itself. You can always switch back to it and open new windows.
