Where is the safest place to be during a tornado?

Published in Weather 1 min read

The safest place to be during a tornado is in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building.

If you have a basement, this is the best option. Choose a room in the center of your basement, away from windows.
If you don't have a basement, choose a small, interior room on the lowest floor, like a bathroom or closet. Stay away from windows, doors, and exterior walls.
Get under a sturdy piece of furniture like a heavy table or desk to protect yourself from falling debris.
Cover your head with your hands or a blanket to protect yourself from flying objects.

Important: If you are in a mobile home or a building that is not structurally sound, leave immediately and seek shelter in a sturdy building. Do not try to outrun a tornado.
