How to Import a Parallels Virtual Machine into VMware Fusion Player?

Published in Virtual Machine Migration 2 mins read

Unfortunately, you cannot directly import a Parallels virtual machine into VMware Fusion Player. This is because Parallels and VMware use different virtual machine formats and technologies. They are not compatible with each other.

However, you can migrate your Parallels virtual machine to a VMware-compatible format by following these steps:

  1. Export the Parallels virtual machine as a virtual disk image. This can usually be done through the Parallels Desktop application.
  2. Convert the virtual disk image to a VMware-compatible format. Several tools are available for this purpose, such as:
    • VMware Converter: This free tool is available from VMware and can convert virtual machines from various formats, including Parallels.
    • Ovftool: This command-line tool is also available from VMware and can be used to convert virtual machines between different formats.
  3. Import the converted virtual disk image into VMware Fusion Player. This can be done through the Fusion Player application.

Example:

  • You have a Parallels virtual machine running Windows 10.
  • You want to run it on VMware Fusion Player.
  • You export the Parallels virtual machine as a .pvm file.
  • You use VMware Converter to convert the .pvm file to a .vmdk file.
  • You import the .vmdk file into VMware Fusion Player.

Note:

  • The conversion process may take some time, depending on the size of your virtual machine.
  • You may need to reinstall your operating system after the conversion.
  • Make sure you have enough disk space to store the converted virtual machine.
