What is the difference between SMS and MMS?

Published in Technology 1 min read

SMS and MMS are both ways to send messages on your phone, but they have key differences:

SMS (Short Message Service)

  • Text-only: SMS messages can only send plain text, like letters, numbers, and punctuation.
  • Limited characters: You're restricted to 160 characters per message.
  • Widely supported: Nearly every mobile phone supports SMS.

MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service)

  • Multimedia: MMS messages can include text, images, videos, audio files, and even small documents.
  • Larger file size: MMS messages allow for much larger files than SMS.
  • Not universally supported: Some older phones may not support MMS.

Here's a simple analogy:

  • SMS is like sending a postcard: It's basic and only allows for a small amount of text.
  • MMS is like sending a package: You can include more content, like photos, videos, and even small gifts.

In summary, SMS is for short text messages, while MMS is for more multimedia-rich messages.
