Computer monitor screens are made of a variety of materials, depending on the type of technology used. The most common types of monitors today are LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and LED (Light Emitting Diode).
LCD Monitors
LCD monitors use a layer of liquid crystals sandwiched between two sheets of polarized glass. These crystals can be aligned or misaligned by applying an electric current, which determines whether light passes through or is blocked.
- Backlight: LCD monitors use a backlight, typically consisting of CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps) or LEDs, to illuminate the liquid crystals.
- Color Filter: A layer of color filters is placed on top of the liquid crystals to create the colors we see on the screen.
LED Monitors
LED monitors use LEDs as their backlight source, which are more energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan than CCFLs.
- Direct-lit LED: In direct-lit LED monitors, LEDs are placed directly behind the LCD panel, providing more uniform illumination.
- Edge-lit LED: In edge-lit LED monitors, LEDs are placed along the edges of the panel, and their light is diffused across the screen.
Other Materials
In addition to the core components described above, computer monitors also use various other materials, such as:
- Glass: The front of the screen is made of glass to protect the delicate LCD panel.
- Plastic: The casing of the monitor is often made of plastic for durability and affordability.
- Metal: Some monitors use metal frames for added sturdiness and a premium look.
