Why Does My Snake Feel Cold?

Published in Snake Care 2 mins read

Snakes are cold-blooded animals, meaning they rely on external heat sources to regulate their body temperature. Therefore, it's completely normal for a snake to feel cold to the touch, especially if it's not basking under a heat source.

You might feel your snake is cold because:

  • Your snake is not basking: Snakes need a warm basking spot to regulate their temperature. If they're not basking, they'll feel cool.
  • You're feeling your snake's cool side: Snakes have a cool side and a warm side. The warm side is where they absorb heat from their environment, while the cool side is used for heat dissipation.
  • Your snake is shedding: Snakes can feel cool to the touch when shedding, as their skin is dry and they're not basking as often.
  • You're simply more sensitive to temperature than your snake: Your body temperature is significantly higher than your snake's, so it will always feel cooler to you.

If your snake is lethargic, not eating, or shows other signs of illness, it's important to contact a reptile veterinarian. However, a cold snake doesn't always mean there's a problem. As long as your snake is healthy and active, there's no need to worry if it feels cold.
