How Do You Sew Elastic Pants on Waistband?

Published in Sewing 2 mins read

Sewing elastic into a waistband for pants is a simple process that can be done with a sewing machine or by hand. Here's how to do it:

1. Prepare the Waistband

  • Cut the waistband: Measure your desired waistband length and cut the fabric accordingly. Add seam allowances to the length and width.
  • Fold and press: Fold the waistband in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press along the fold.
  • Sew the waistband: Sew the short ends of the waistband together, right sides facing, leaving a small opening for turning.

2. Insert the Elastic

  • Cut the elastic: Measure your waist circumference and cut the elastic to the desired length, subtracting about 1-2 inches for ease of movement.
  • Pin the elastic: Pin the elastic to the raw edge of the waistband, right sides together. The elastic should be slightly gathered to fit the waistband.
  • Sew the elastic: Sew the elastic to the waistband using a zig-zag stitch or a stretch stitch.

3. Finish the Waistband

  • Turn the waistband: Turn the waistband right side out through the opening you left for turning.
  • Close the opening: Hand-stitch the opening closed.
  • Press the waistband: Press the waistband to smooth out any wrinkles.

4. Attach the Waistband to the Pants

  • Pin the waistband: Pin the waistband to the top edge of the pants, right sides together.
  • Sew the waistband: Sew the waistband to the pants using a straight stitch.
  • Finish the seam: Finish the seam with a zig-zag stitch or serger to prevent fraying.

5. Try on and Adjust

  • Try on the pants: Put on the pants and adjust the waistband as needed.
  • Make any adjustments: If the waistband is too tight or too loose, you can adjust the elastic length before sewing it to the waistband.

By following these simple steps, you can easily sew elastic into a waistband for your pants.
