What kind of wave causes sunburn?

Published in Science 1 min read

Sunburn is caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, a type of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the sun.

UV radiation is divided into three categories:

  • UVA: This type of radiation has the longest wavelength and is responsible for premature aging of the skin.
  • UVB: This radiation has a shorter wavelength and is the primary cause of sunburn.
  • UVC: This radiation has the shortest wavelength and is almost completely absorbed by the Earth's atmosphere.

While all three types of UV radiation can damage the skin, UVB is the most harmful because it penetrates the outer layer of skin and damages DNA. This damage can lead to sunburn, skin cancer, and other skin problems.

To protect yourself from sunburn, it is important to wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, wear protective clothing, and limit your time in the sun, especially during peak hours.
