Can You Cry Underwater?

Published in Science 1 min read

You cannot cry underwater in the same way you do on land. Tears are made of water, and water mixes with water. This means that your tears would simply blend in with the surrounding water, making them invisible.

Why Tears Don't Work Underwater

  • Tears are mostly water: When you cry, your tear ducts release a fluid that is primarily water.
  • Water mixes with water: Underwater, your tears would mix with the surrounding water and disappear.
  • No evaporation: On land, tears evaporate, leaving behind salt and other components. This process doesn't occur underwater.

How to Cry Underwater

While you can't cry in the traditional sense underwater, you can still experience the feeling of crying. Your tear ducts will still release tears, but they won't be visible. You may also feel the same emotional sensations associated with crying, such as sadness or frustration.
