Published in Religion 2 mins read

Digambara, a Sanskrit word meaning "sky-clad," refers to a sect within Jainism. This term describes a specific way of life followed by some Jain monks and nuns, characterized by:

  • Nudity: Digambara ascetics renounce all material possessions, including clothing. They believe that by living in a state of complete nakedness, they symbolize their detachment from worldly attachments.
  • Austerity: Digambara monks and nuns practice strict self-discipline, including:
    • Living on alms: They rely solely on the kindness of others for food and shelter.
    • Avoiding any form of violence: This includes not harming any living beings, even insects.
    • Maintaining celibacy: They abstain from sexual activities.
  • Meditation: Digambara ascetics dedicate themselves to spiritual practices, including meditation and contemplation.

The Digambara sect is one of the two main branches of Jainism, the other being the Svetambara sect. While both sects share the core principles of Jainism, they differ in their practices and interpretations of certain doctrines.

Examples:

  • Bhagwan Mahavir: The 24th Tirthankara of Jainism, is believed to have been a Digambara ascetic.
  • Many Digambara monks and nuns live in India and other parts of the world today.
