What Pets Can Muslims Not Have?

Published in Religion and Culture 1 min read

There are no specific animals that Islam prohibits Muslims from keeping as pets. The Islamic faith emphasizes compassion and kindness towards all living creatures, including animals.

However, some Islamic scholars advise against keeping certain animals due to practical or religious concerns. These include:

  • Dogs: While dogs are not inherently forbidden, some scholars advise against keeping them indoors due to concerns about ritual purity. This is because dogs are considered najis (impure) in Islamic tradition.
  • Pigs: Pigs are considered haram (forbidden) in Islam for consumption, and some scholars extend this prohibition to keeping them as pets.
  • Animals that are harmful or dangerous: Muslims are encouraged to avoid keeping animals that pose a threat to themselves or others.

Ultimately, the decision of whether or not to keep a particular animal as a pet is a personal one, guided by individual beliefs and practices.
