Which Mental Illness is Rare?

Published in Rare Mental Disorders 1 min read

It is difficult to definitively say which mental illness is the rarest as there are many rare conditions with varying prevalence rates, and new discoveries are constantly being made. However, some examples of rare mental illnesses include:

  • Cotard delusion: A condition where individuals believe they are dead, do not exist, or are missing vital organs.
  • Capgras delusion: A disorder where individuals believe a loved one has been replaced by an imposter, despite the individual appearing identical.
  • Charles Bonnet syndrome: A condition where individuals experience vivid hallucinations, usually visual, in the absence of any other mental health issues.
  • Folie à deux: Also known as shared delusional disorder, this occurs when two individuals share the same delusional belief system.

While these examples are considered rare, it's important to note that the prevalence of any mental illness can vary depending on geographical location, cultural factors, and diagnostic criteria.
