Emotional and emotional intelligence are often confused, but they are distinct concepts.

Emotional:

Emotional refers to our feelings, moods, and reactions to events. It's the raw experience of emotions, like joy, sadness, anger, and fear. We all have emotions, and they are a fundamental part of being human.

Emotional Intelligence:

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to understand and manage our own emotions, as well as the emotions of others. It involves several key skills:

  • Self-awareness: Recognizing and understanding our own emotions.
  • Self-regulation: Controlling our emotions and impulses.
  • Motivation: Staying focused and driven towards goals.
  • Empathy: Understanding and sharing the feelings of others.
  • Social skills: Building and maintaining healthy relationships.

In simple terms:

  • Emotional is what we feel.
  • Emotional Intelligence is how we handle those feelings.

Example:

  • Emotional: You feel angry after a frustrating day at work.
  • Emotional Intelligence: You recognize your anger, understand its cause, and choose a healthy way to express it, like taking a walk or talking to a friend.

In short, while everyone experiences emotions, not everyone possesses high emotional intelligence. EQ is a learned skill that can be developed over time through self-awareness, practice, and conscious effort.
