What is the Most Common Placental Abnormality?

Published in Pregnancy 1 min read

The most common placental abnormality is placenta previa.

Placenta previa occurs when the placenta implants low in the uterus, covering part or all of the cervix. This can cause bleeding during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester.

Other common placental abnormalities include:

  • Placental abruption: The placenta detaches from the uterine wall before delivery.
  • Placenta accreta: The placenta grows too deeply into the uterine wall.
  • Vasa previa: Blood vessels from the umbilical cord run across the cervix.

Placental abnormalities can cause complications for both the mother and the baby. Early detection and proper management are essential for a healthy pregnancy.
