Which MBTI Types Are Introverts?

Published in Personality Types 3 mins read

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a personality assessment that categorizes individuals into 16 different personality types based on four dichotomies:

  • Introversion (I) vs. Extroversion (E): This refers to how individuals gain energy and recharge. Introverts gain energy from spending time alone, while extroverts gain energy from interacting with others.
  • Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N): This refers to how individuals gather information. Sensors prefer concrete facts and details, while intuitives prefer abstract concepts and possibilities.
  • Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F): This refers to how individuals make decisions. Thinkers prioritize logic and objectivity, while feelers prioritize empathy and personal values.
  • Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P): This refers to how individuals approach the outside world. Judgers prefer structure and organization, while perceivers prefer spontaneity and flexibility.

The MBTI types that are considered introverted are those that have the "I" preference in the first dichotomy. This means they are Introverted-Sensing (IS), Introverted-Intuitive (IN), Introverted-Thinking (IT), or Introverted-Feeling (IF).

Here are the four introverted MBTI types:

  • ISTJ (Introverted-Sensing-Thinking-Judging): Known as the "Duty Fulfillers," they are practical, reliable, and detail-oriented. They value tradition and stability.
  • ISFJ (Introverted-Sensing-Feeling-Judging): Known as the "Protectors," they are warm, caring, and loyal. They are dedicated to their loved ones and have a strong sense of duty.
  • INFJ (Introverted-Intuitive-Feeling-Judging): Known as the "Advocates," they are insightful, empathetic, and idealistic. They have a strong sense of purpose and are passionate about making a difference in the world.
  • INTJ (Introverted-Intuitive-Thinking-Judging): Known as the "Masterminds," they are strategic, analytical, and independent. They are driven by their vision and are always looking for ways to improve the world.
  • ISTP (Introverted-Sensing-Thinking-Perceiving): Known as the "Craftsmen," they are practical, resourceful, and adaptable. They enjoy hands-on activities and are often skilled in technical fields.
  • ISFP (Introverted-Sensing-Feeling-Perceiving): Known as the "Artists," they are creative, sensitive, and independent. They are passionate about their interests and enjoy expressing themselves through various artistic mediums.
  • INFP (Introverted-Intuitive-Feeling-Perceiving): Known as the "Mediators," they are idealistic, compassionate, and creative. They are deeply in touch with their emotions and value authenticity and meaning.
  • INTP (Introverted-Intuitive-Thinking-Perceiving): Known as the "Logicians," they are analytical, curious, and independent. They enjoy exploring new ideas and are often drawn to fields like science and technology.

It's important to note that while these MBTI types are considered introverted, they are not all the same. Each type has its own unique combination of preferences that influences how they interact with the world.

For example: While both ISTJs and INTJs are introverted, ISTJs are more focused on practical details and routine, while INTJs are more interested in abstract ideas and strategic planning.

Ultimately, the MBTI is just a tool to help us understand ourselves and others better. It's not a definitive measure of personality, and it's important to remember that everyone is an individual with their own unique strengths and weaknesses.
