Does a surrogate have your DNA?

Published in Parenting 1 min read

No, a surrogate does not have your DNA.

A surrogate is a woman who carries and gives birth to a baby for another person or couple. The surrogate's role is to provide a womb for the developing embryo, but she does not contribute her own genetic material.

The baby's DNA comes from the intended parents through either:

  • In vitro fertilization (IVF): The intended parents' eggs and sperm are combined in a laboratory to create an embryo, which is then transferred to the surrogate's uterus.
  • Sperm donation: If the intended mother cannot produce eggs, a sperm donor's sperm is combined with the intended mother's egg to create an embryo, which is then transferred to the surrogate's uterus.

Therefore, the surrogate's DNA is not present in the baby. The baby's DNA is exclusively from the intended parents or the sperm donor.
