Napoleon's first wife, Joséphine de Beauharnais, died of pneumonia on May 29, 1814, at the Château de Malmaison. Despite the annulment, Napoleon and Joséphine remained close until her death.
After her death, she was buried at the Château de Malmaison, but her remains were later moved to the Église Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul in Rueil-Malmaison.
