How do I transpose a clip in Ableton?

Published in Music Production 2 mins read

Transposing a clip in Ableton Live changes the pitch of the audio without altering its tempo. This can be done in two main ways:

1. Using the Transpose Tool

  • Locate the Transpose Tool: This is found in the Clip View of the Session View, represented by a small "T" icon next to the clip's name.
  • Adjust the Transpose Value: Click and drag the Transpose Tool left or right to change the pitch. Each step represents a semitone.
  • Fine-tuning: For more precise adjustments, right-click on the Transpose Tool and choose "Fine Tuning". This will open a numerical input field where you can enter the desired transposition in semitones.

2. Using the Key Editor

  • Access the Key Editor: Double-click on the clip to open the Sample Editor, then click the "Key Editor" button in the upper toolbar.
  • Transpose the Notes: The Key Editor displays the audio's pitch information. Click and drag individual notes vertically to change their pitch.
  • Transposing Entire Regions: Select a portion of the audio in the Key Editor and use the "Transpose" function from the "Edit" menu to adjust the pitch of the entire region.

Example: To transpose a clip up by a whole step (two semitones), use the Transpose Tool and drag it two steps to the right. Alternatively, in the Key Editor, select the entire clip and use the "Transpose" function to increase the pitch by two semitones.
