The animated film Anastasia tells the story of a young woman who believes she is the lost Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna, the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra of Russia.
The film opens in 1917, during the Russian Revolution. Anastasia and her family are forced to flee their home in the Winter Palace, but their escape is interrupted, and the family is separated.
Years later, a young woman named Anya, living in an orphanage in St. Petersburg, is haunted by recurring dreams of her past. She believes she is Anastasia and seeks to find proof of her identity.
Meanwhile, a con artist named Dimitri and his partner, Vladimir, are looking for the real Anastasia. They hope to use her as a way to claim a reward offered by the Dowager Empress Marie.
Anya and Dimitri meet and form a bond, and Dimitri helps Anya embark on a journey to Paris, where she can prove her identity.
Anya’s quest for the truth is challenged by Rasputin, the former advisor to the Tsar, who was killed years before but remains a powerful force. Rasputin seeks to prevent Anastasia’s return because he fears her power.
Through a series of events, Anya begins to unlock memories of her past, and she eventually confronts Rasputin and proves her identity. She also learns about the love between her and Dimitri, and they end up together.
The film concludes with Anya returning to Russia, where she is welcomed by her family and the people of Russia.
