Why Are iPhone Photos Not JPEG?

Published in Mobile Technology 2 mins read

iPhones, despite being known for their excellent cameras, do not save photos in the ubiquitous JPEG format by default. Instead, they use a proprietary format called HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format).

Here's why:

  • Smaller file sizes: HEIF files are significantly smaller than JPEGs while maintaining the same level of image quality. This translates to more storage space for your photos and faster sharing speeds.
  • Better image quality: HEIF supports a wider color gamut and deeper color depth than JPEG, resulting in more vibrant and detailed images.
  • More metadata: HEIF files can store more metadata, such as location data, camera settings, and editing history. This can be useful for organizing and managing your photos.

While HEIF offers several advantages, some platforms and applications might not support it yet. You can easily change the default photo format to JPEG in your iPhone's settings.

To change the default photo format on your iPhone:

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap on Camera.
  3. Scroll down and tap on Formats.
  4. Select Most Compatible to save photos as JPEGs.

By understanding the benefits of HEIF and knowing how to change the default format, you can make the most of your iPhone's camera and enjoy high-quality photos without sacrificing storage space.
