Patients with weakened immune systems are at the highest risk for developing sepsis. This includes individuals with:
- Chronic diseases: Such as diabetes, cancer, kidney disease, liver disease, and chronic lung disease.
- Recent surgeries: Especially major surgeries or those involving implanted devices.
- Severe injuries: Including burns, trauma, and major fractures.
- Infections: Particularly those caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses.
- Immunosuppressant medications: Used to treat autoimmune diseases or following organ transplants.
- Premature infants: Due to their underdeveloped immune systems.
- Older adults: As their immune systems naturally weaken with age.
These individuals are more susceptible to infections, which can quickly progress to sepsis if not treated promptly.
