Neither hemodialysis nor peritoneal dialysis is permanent. Both are life-sustaining treatments that help filter waste products from the blood when the kidneys are no longer functioning properly.
- Hemodialysis involves filtering the blood through a machine outside the body. It is typically performed 3 times per week at a dialysis center.
- Peritoneal dialysis uses a special fluid to filter waste products in the abdomen. It can be done at home and allows for more flexibility in scheduling.
While these treatments can significantly improve quality of life, they are not a cure for kidney failure. Ultimately, a kidney transplant is the only permanent solution for end-stage renal disease.
