Does MRI Affect Sperm?

Published in Medical 2 mins read

The short answer is no, MRI scans do not affect sperm.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses powerful magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of the body. These waves are not harmful to sperm, nor do they penetrate the body deep enough to reach the testicles where sperm is produced.

Here's why you can be reassured:

  • MRI uses non-ionizing radiation: Unlike X-rays or CT scans, which use ionizing radiation that can potentially damage cells, MRI uses non-ionizing radiation. This means it doesn't carry enough energy to alter the structure of DNA or affect sperm production.
  • MRI's magnetic field is localized: The magnetic field generated by an MRI machine is confined to the scanner itself. It does not extend beyond the machine and therefore does not affect sperm production or function.
  • Sperm production is protected: The testicles are located outside the body, shielded by the scrotum. This natural protection further reduces the potential for any external influence, including MRI, to impact sperm.

While MRI itself does not pose any risk to sperm, it's always best to consult with your doctor if you have any specific concerns regarding fertility or potential impacts of any medical procedure.
