Understanding kV Product

kV product, often referred to as kVp-mAs, is a measure of the total radiation dose delivered during a medical imaging exam. It is calculated by multiplying the kilovoltage peak (kVp), which represents the voltage applied across the X-ray tube, by the milliampere-seconds (mAs), which represents the amount of current flowing through the tube.

Importance of kV Product

The kV product provides a valuable tool for evaluating radiation dose in medical imaging. It is used to:

  • Monitor radiation exposure for patients and healthcare professionals.
  • Compare dose levels between different imaging techniques and facilities.
  • Optimize imaging parameters to achieve the best image quality with the lowest possible dose.

How kV Product Works

  • kVp: Determines the energy of the X-ray photons produced. Higher kVp results in higher energy photons and greater penetration through tissue.

By adjusting either kVp or mAs, the kV product can be manipulated to achieve the desired image quality while minimizing radiation dose.

  • A chest X-ray with a kVp of 120 and an mAs of 2 would have a kV product of 240.
  • A CT scan with a kVp of 140 and an mAs of 100 would have a kV product of 14,000.
