Which Medical Degree is Accepted in Canada?

Published in Medical Education 1 min read

In Canada, the medical degree accepted for practicing medicine is the Doctor of Medicine (MD).

This degree is awarded after completing a four-year medical school program followed by a residency program, which can range from two to seven years depending on the medical specialty.

The MD degree is recognized by the Medical Council of Canada (MCC), which is the national regulatory body for medical doctors in Canada.

To practice medicine in Canada, graduates of international medical schools must also pass the MCC Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) and complete the Medical Council of Canada's (MCC) licensing process.

While some other medical degrees, such as the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), may be accepted in some provinces, the MD is the standard medical degree recognized across Canada.

You can find more information about the licensing process and requirements on the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) website.
