What are signs of Down syndrome in an ultrasound?

Published in Medical Conditions 2 mins read

Ultrasound scans can reveal some signs that may be associated with Down syndrome in a developing fetus. These signs are not definitive diagnoses but can prompt further investigation. Here are some common signs seen on ultrasound:

Signs of Down Syndrome on Ultrasound:

  • Increased Nuchal Translucency (NT): This refers to the fluid-filled space at the back of the baby's neck. A thicker-than-normal NT measurement can be a sign of Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Hypoplastic Nasal Bone: This means the bridge of the nose is smaller than expected.
  • Echogenic Bowel: This refers to unusually bright echoes in the intestines, which can be associated with Down syndrome.
  • Single Umbilical Artery (SUA): Normally, there are three blood vessels in the umbilical cord. The presence of only two (SUA) can be a sign of Down syndrome.
  • Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD): This is a hole in the wall between the heart's ventricles. VSDs are more common in babies with Down syndrome.

It's crucial to remember that these ultrasound findings are not conclusive diagnoses of Down syndrome. They can also be present in babies without Down syndrome. Further testing, such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS), may be recommended to confirm a diagnosis.
