Why Put Vaseline on a Surgical Wound?

Published in Medical Advice 1 min read

You should never put Vaseline on a surgical wound.

Applying petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to a surgical wound can:

  • Trap bacteria: Vaseline creates a barrier that prevents the wound from breathing and can trap bacteria, increasing the risk of infection.
  • Delay healing: Vaseline can hinder the natural healing process by blocking the wound from drying and forming a scab.
  • Interfere with dressings: Vaseline can make it difficult for bandages and dressings to adhere properly, reducing their effectiveness.

Instead of Vaseline, your doctor will likely recommend a specific wound care solution.

Always follow your doctor's instructions for wound care.
