There isn't a single "test" for liver metabolism, but rather a panel of blood tests known as liver function tests (LFTs). These tests measure the levels of various substances produced and processed by the liver, giving insight into its overall health and functionality.
Liver function tests typically include:
- Liver enzymes: These include alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), which can indicate liver damage or inflammation.
- Bilirubin: This waste product is produced by the breakdown of red blood cells and processed by the liver. High levels can suggest problems with the liver's ability to remove bilirubin.
- Albumin: This protein is produced by the liver and helps maintain fluid balance in the body. Low levels may indicate liver damage or malnutrition.
- Prothrombin time (PT): This test measures how long it takes for blood to clot. The liver produces clotting factors, and a prolonged PT can indicate liver dysfunction.
The results of these tests are used to diagnose liver diseases, monitor the progression of liver conditions, and assess the effectiveness of treatment.
