What is the difference between active and passive vocabulary in a PDF?

Published in Language Learning 1 min read

While the terms "active" and "passive" vocabulary are commonly used in language learning, they are not directly applicable to PDFs. PDFs are static documents and do not possess an "active" or "passive" vocabulary in the same way that a human language learner does.

Instead, the terms active and passive vocabulary are often used to describe the words a person uses versus the words they understand.

  • Active vocabulary: Words that someone uses regularly in speaking and writing.
  • Passive vocabulary: Words that someone understands when reading or listening, but may not use themselves.

Therefore, when referring to a PDF, it's more accurate to talk about the vocabulary of the document itself. This refers to the total set of words used within the PDF.

For example, a PDF about computer programming might have a vocabulary that includes terms like algorithm, variable, function, and loop. However, it's not possible to categorize these terms as "active" or "passive" within the context of the PDF itself.
