Are you a citizen if you have a baby in Japan?

Published in Japanese Citizenship Law 1 min read

No, giving birth in Japan does not automatically grant citizenship to the child. Japanese citizenship is determined by jus sanguinis, meaning citizenship is based on the nationality of the parents, not the place of birth.

  • If one or both parents are Japanese citizens, the child will automatically acquire Japanese nationality.
  • If neither parent is a Japanese citizen, the child will not be a Japanese citizen regardless of where they were born.

However, even if a child is not born a Japanese citizen, they may be eligible for citizenship later in life through naturalization.
