What Allah Says About Tears?

Published in Islam 3 mins read

Allah, in the Holy Quran, speaks about tears in various contexts, often associating them with emotions and spiritual experiences.

Tears of Joy and Gratitude

  • Quran 17:107: "And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient, who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." " - This verse emphasizes the importance of patience and resilience in the face of adversity. Tears of joy and gratitude are often a response to overcoming challenges and remembering Allah's blessings.

Tears of Sorrow and Grief

  • Quran 2:214: "Say, 'It is Allah Who creates you and then causes you to die, and then He will gather you together for the Day of Resurrection, there is no doubt about it.' But most of the people do not know." - This verse highlights the inevitability of death and the importance of reflecting on our mortality. Tears of sorrow and grief are natural reactions to loss and separation.

Tears of Repentance and Forgiveness

  • Quran 5:35: "And those who, when they commit an indecency or wrong themselves, remember Allah and seek forgiveness for their sins - and who is there to forgive sins except Allah? - and they do not persist in what they did, while they know." - This verse emphasizes the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah for our sins. Tears of repentance can be a powerful expression of our sincere desire for forgiveness.

Tears of Fear and Awe

  • Quran 17:109: "And those who say, 'Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring the comfort of our eyes and make us a leader for the righteous.'" - This verse speaks about the human desire for a blessed family and a good life. Tears of fear and awe can express our longing for Allah's blessings and protection.

Tears as a Sign of Mercy

  • Quran 23:79: "And the angels will descend upon the righteous, saying, 'Do not fear and do not grieve. Receive good tidings of Paradise which you were promised.'" - This verse describes the heavenly scene when the righteous are greeted by angels. Tears of joy and relief are a natural response to the promise of paradise and the removal of all fear.

The Quran does not explicitly command or forbid crying, but it acknowledges the natural human experience of tears and connects them to various emotional and spiritual states. Tears can be a powerful expression of faith, gratitude, sorrow, repentance, and even awe.
