Does drinking wife's milk break Nikkah?

Published in Islam 1 min read

Drinking your wife's milk does not break the Nikkah (marriage contract) in Islam. This is because the breastfeeding that creates the relationship of mahram (forbidden marriage) is a prolonged and deliberate act that establishes a familial bond.

Simply drinking your wife's milk, even intentionally, does not create this bond. This is due to the fact that it doesn't meet the requirements of milk-nursing that are needed for the establishment of mahram status, which are:

  • Purposeful breastfeeding: The breastfeeding must be done with the intention of establishing a mahram relationship.
  • Sustaining the child with the milk: The milk must be the primary source of nourishment for the child.
  • Duration: The breastfeeding must continue for a specific duration, which varies according to different Islamic schools of thought.

Therefore, a husband drinking his wife's milk does not make her his mother, and it doesn't impact the validity of their marriage.
