Do intelligent people worry less?

Published in Intelligence and Anxiety 1 min read

It's a common misconception that intelligent people worry less. In fact, research suggests the opposite might be true. Highly intelligent individuals often experience more anxiety and worry due to several factors:

  • Increased awareness and processing: Intelligent people are often more aware of potential problems and threats, leading to a higher likelihood of worrying about them.
  • Higher expectations: They may set higher standards for themselves and others, leading to increased pressure and anxiety when those standards aren't met.
  • Overthinking: Intelligent people tend to analyze situations more deeply, which can fuel overthinking and lead to worry.
  • Sensitivity to injustice: They may be more sensitive to social injustices and inequalities, causing them to worry about the world's problems.

While intelligence doesn't directly cause anxiety, it can contribute to a heightened awareness and sensitivity that can lead to increased worry. This doesn't mean intelligent people are always anxious, but they may be more prone to it.
