While onions have a strong odor, they are not effective at repelling mosquitoes. Mosquitoes are attracted to the carbon dioxide we exhale, our body heat, and certain chemicals in our sweat. The scent of onions might mask some of these signals, but it won't deter mosquitoes effectively.
There are many other more effective ways to repel mosquitoes, such as:
- Using insect repellent containing DEET or picaridin.
- Wearing light-colored clothing.
- Avoiding areas with standing water.
- Using mosquito nets.
- Planting mosquito-repelling plants like citronella, lavender, and basil.
