How Do You Resize an Image in Photoshop?

Published in Image Editing 2 mins read

You can resize an image in Photoshop using the Image Size dialog box.

Steps to Resize an Image in Photoshop:

  1. Open the image: Open the image you want to resize in Photoshop.
  2. Access Image Size: Go to Image > Image Size or use the keyboard shortcut Alt+Ctrl+I (Windows) or Option+Command+I (Mac).
  3. Adjust Dimensions: In the Image Size dialog box, you can adjust the image's width, height, and resolution.
  4. Choose Resampling Method: Select a resampling method from the Resample Image dropdown menu. The method you choose will determine how Photoshop interpolates pixels when resizing.
    • Bicubic: This method is generally the best choice for most images.
    • Bilinear: This method is faster than bicubic but can result in softer images.
    • Nearest Neighbor: This method is the fastest but can result in pixelated images.
  5. Preview Changes: Check the Preview box to see how the changes will affect the image.
  6. Apply Changes: Click OK to apply the changes.

Additional Tips:

  • Maintain Aspect Ratio: To maintain the image's original proportions, check the Constrain Proportions box.
  • Resize for Web: When resizing images for the web, you can use the Document Size option to change the canvas size.
  • Use Smart Objects: If you want to resize an image without permanently affecting the original pixels, convert it to a Smart Object before resizing.

Example:

Let's say you want to resize an image from 3000 pixels wide to 1000 pixels wide while maintaining the aspect ratio. You would:

  1. Open the image in Photoshop.
  2. Go to Image > Image Size.
  3. In the Image Size dialog box, enter 1000 in the Width field.
  4. Ensure the Constrain Proportions box is checked.
  5. Choose a resampling method, such as Bicubic.
  6. Click OK.

This will resize the image to 1000 pixels wide while maintaining the original aspect ratio.
