How Do You Change the Temperature of a Picture in Photoshop?

Published in Image Editing 2 mins read

You can change the temperature of a picture in Photoshop using the Color Balance adjustment layer.

Steps:

  1. Open your image in Photoshop.
  2. Create a new adjustment layer. You can do this by clicking the "Create new fill or adjustment layer" icon at the bottom of the Layers panel or by going to Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Color Balance.
  3. Choose a color balance method. You can choose between "Shadows," "Midtones," or "Highlights." This will determine which parts of the image are affected by the temperature change.
  4. Adjust the sliders. Use the "Cyan/Red" slider to change the temperature. Moving the slider towards cyan will cool the image, while moving it towards red will warm it.

Example:

  • Warm up a photo: To make your photo warmer, move the "Cyan/Red" slider towards red. This will add a reddish hue to the image, making it appear warmer.
  • Cool down a photo: To make your photo cooler, move the "Cyan/Red" slider towards cyan. This will add a bluish hue to the image, making it appear cooler.

Practical Insights:

  • Use the Color Balance adjustment layer to subtly change the temperature of your image. You can also use it to make more dramatic color shifts.
  • Experiment with different color balance methods to see how they affect the image. You can also use the "Preserve Luminosity" option to prevent the adjustment from affecting the brightness of the image.
