Can asexual reproduction happen to humans?

Published in Human Reproduction 1 min read

Asexual reproduction in humans is extremely rare, but it can happen. While humans are typically considered sexually reproducing organisms, there have been documented cases of parthenogenesis, a form of asexual reproduction where an egg develops into a fetus without fertilization.

  • Parthenogenesis: This occurs when an egg cell develops into an embryo without being fertilized by a sperm cell.
  • Monozygotic Twins: Identical twins are a result of a single fertilized egg splitting into two embryos. While not technically asexual reproduction, it can be considered a form of clonal reproduction.
  • In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): IVF involves the fertilization of an egg outside the body, which can be considered a form of artificial asexual reproduction.

While parthenogenesis is extremely rare in humans, there have been documented cases, indicating the potential for this type of reproduction. Research is still ongoing to understand the mechanisms involved.
