How Do I Change a Door Knob?

Changing a door knob is a relatively simple DIY project that can be done in a few steps. Here's how to do it:

1. Gather Your Tools

You will need the following tools:

  • New door knob: Choose a knob that matches your existing door hardware.
  • Screwdriver: A Phillips head screwdriver is usually required.
  • Pencil or marker: For marking the screw holes.

2. Remove the Old Door Knob

  • Locate the set screws: These are small screws that hold the knob to the spindle.
  • Use the screwdriver to loosen the set screws: Be careful not to strip the screws.
  • Pull off the old knob: Once the set screws are loosened, the knob should come off easily.
  • Repeat for the other side: Remove the knob from the opposite side of the door in the same way.

3. Install the New Door Knob

  • Attach the new knob: Insert the spindle through the new knob and attach it to the door using the set screws.
  • Repeat for the other side: Attach the other side of the knob to the door.
  • Tighten the set screws: Make sure the screws are tight enough to hold the knobs securely.

4. Test the Knob

  • Turn the knob: Make sure it turns smoothly and locks and unlocks properly.
  • Check for any loose screws: If any screws are loose, tighten them.
