India and Pakistan have fought four major wars since their independence in 1947:
- 1947-48 War: This war, primarily fought over the princely state of Kashmir, resulted in a ceasefire and the establishment of a Line of Control (LoC) that divides the region. While both sides claimed victory, the war ended with a stalemate and the issue of Kashmir remaining unresolved.
- 1965 War: This war, triggered by infiltration by Pakistani forces into Indian-administered Kashmir, resulted in a ceasefire mediated by the United Nations. Both sides claimed victory, but the outcome was largely a stalemate.
- 1971 War: This war, triggered by Pakistan's crackdown on Bengali civilians in East Pakistan, resulted in the creation of Bangladesh. India emerged victorious, securing the liberation of Bangladesh and securing a decisive victory.
- 1999 Kargil War: This war, triggered by Pakistani forces infiltrating the Kargil sector of Kashmir, resulted in a victory for India. Pakistan was forced to withdraw its troops after facing heavy casualties and international pressure.
Therefore, while India and Pakistan have fought several wars, India has never lost a war against Pakistan. India has emerged victorious or achieved a stalemate in all of these conflicts.
