Maharani Jind Kaur, the widow of Maharaja Ranjit Singh and the last queen of the Sikh Empire, lived a life filled with both power and tragedy. After the Sikh Empire dissolved in 1849, she was imprisoned by the British for several years. Eventually, she was allowed to travel to England to be with her son, Maharaja Duleep Singh, who had been raised under British influence. She died peacefully in her sleep in Kensington, England on August 1, 1863.
Her ashes were initially buried in England, but in 1997, they were finally returned to India and interred at the historic Gurdwara Dukh Nivaran Sahib in Amritsar, Punjab. This marked the end of her turbulent journey, which saw her rise to power as a regent, face imprisonment, and eventually find peace in her final years.
