What are the symptoms of neural tube defects?

Published in Health 3 mins read

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are birth defects that occur when the neural tube, which develops into the brain and spinal cord, doesn't close completely during pregnancy. The symptoms of NTDs vary depending on the severity and location of the defect.

Common Symptoms of Neural Tube Defects:

  • Spina Bifida: This is the most common type of NTD. It occurs when the spinal cord doesn't close completely, leaving a gap in the spine. Symptoms can include:
    • Paralysis or weakness in the legs and feet: This can range from mild weakness to complete paralysis.
    • Loss of bowel and bladder control: This is common in more severe cases.
    • Hydrocephalus: This is a buildup of fluid in the brain, which can cause swelling of the head and other problems.
    • Learning disabilities: This can range from mild to severe.
    • Skin problems: These can include dimpling, hair growth, or a birthmark over the affected area.
  • Anencephaly: This is a serious NTD where a large part of the brain is missing. Babies with anencephaly are usually born without a skull, and they rarely survive for more than a few days. Symptoms include:
    • Missing or underdeveloped brain: This can lead to severe cognitive disabilities and physical impairments.
    • Lack of a skull: This is a visible sign of anencephaly.
    • Other physical defects: These can include facial deformities and problems with the heart and lungs.
  • Encephalocele: This is a rare type of NTD where part of the brain protrudes through a hole in the skull. Symptoms can include:
    • A bulge or sac on the head: This is the most visible sign of an encephalocele.
    • Seizures: These can occur due to the pressure on the brain.
    • Developmental delays: This can occur if the brain is damaged.

Diagnosis and Treatment:

NTDs can be diagnosed during pregnancy with prenatal testing, such as ultrasound and amniocentesis. Treatment for NTDs depends on the severity of the defect and may include surgery, physical therapy, and medication.

Prevention:

Taking folic acid supplements before and during pregnancy can help prevent NTDs. Other measures that can help include:

  • Eating a healthy diet: This includes eating plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
  • Avoiding alcohol and smoking: These can increase the risk of NTDs.
