Most boxers suffer from brain injuries, specifically chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). This neurodegenerative disease is caused by repeated head trauma and is linked to a range of symptoms, including:
- Memory loss
- Confusion
- Depression
- Aggression
- Dementia
CTE is a serious condition that can significantly impact the quality of life of former boxers. It is important to note that not all boxers develop CTE, but the risk is significantly higher in those who have sustained multiple concussions or other head injuries throughout their careers.
While there is no cure for CTE, researchers are working to develop treatments and preventative measures.
