Justin Bieber has been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, also known as herpes zoster oticus. This is a rare neurological disorder caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox.
The virus can lie dormant in the body after a chickenpox infection, and it can reactivate years later, causing Ramsay Hunt Syndrome.
Symptoms of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome include:
- Facial paralysis
- Pain in the ear
- Hearing loss
- Loss of taste
- Rash around the ear
Bieber's diagnosis was confirmed in June 2022 when he shared a video of himself explaining the symptoms he was experiencing. He canceled several concerts and appearances to focus on his recovery.
There is no cure for Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, but treatment focuses on managing symptoms and preventing complications. Treatment may include antiviral medications, corticosteroids, and physical therapy.
While it can be a serious condition, most people recover fully from Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. However, some people may experience long-term complications, such as hearing loss or facial paralysis.
