What is the hardest substance in the body?

Published in Health & Biology 1 min read

The hardest substance in the human body is enamel, the outer layer of our teeth.

Enamel is composed primarily of hydroxyapatite, a mineral that is incredibly strong and resistant to wear and tear. It’s harder than bone and even harder than steel!

Enamel serves as a protective barrier for the softer dentin layer beneath it, shielding teeth from the forces of chewing and biting.

While enamel is incredibly tough, it is not indestructible. Acidic foods and drinks can erode enamel over time, leading to cavities and tooth sensitivity.

Here are some things you can do to protect your enamel:

  • Brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily to remove plaque and bacteria.
  • Limit sugary drinks and acidic foods.
  • See your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.
