How to French Braid?

Published in Hair Styling 2 mins read

A French braid is a classic hairstyle that involves weaving three strands of hair together, gradually incorporating more hair from the sides as you braid down. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to French braid your own hair:

1. Prepare Your Hair

  • Start with clean, dry hair. This will make it easier to braid and will help the braid last longer.
  • Brush your hair thoroughly to remove any tangles.
  • Section your hair at the crown of your head. This section should be about the width of your desired braid.

2. Start Braiding

  • Divide the section into three strands. Hold the strands between your fingers.
  • Cross the right strand over the middle strand.
  • Cross the left strand over the new middle strand.
  • Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you've braided about an inch or two of hair.

3. Incorporate More Hair

  • Pick up a small section of hair from the right side of your head and add it to the right strand.
  • Cross the right strand over the middle strand.
  • Pick up a small section of hair from the left side of your head and add it to the left strand.
  • Cross the left strand over the new middle strand.

4. Continue Braiding

  • Continue braiding in this way, adding more hair from the sides as you go.
  • Keep your braid tight to prevent it from falling out.
  • Once you reach the nape of your neck, you can switch to a regular braid or secure the braid with a hair tie.

5. Secure the Braid

  • Secure the braid with a hair tie at the end.
  • You can also use a bobby pin to secure any loose strands.

Tips

  • Practice makes perfect. It may take a few tries to get the hang of French braiding.
  • Use a mirror to help you see what you're doing.
  • Don't be afraid to experiment with different braid styles.
  • Try using hairspray to help keep your braid in place.
