Published in GIS and Mapping 2 mins read

Editing a layer in QGIS allows you to modify its features, attributes, and styling. Here's how you can do it:

1. Enable Editing Mode

  • Open your QGIS project and locate the layer you want to edit.
  • Click the "Toggle Editing" button in the toolbar, or right-click on the layer in the Layers Panel and select "Toggle Editing".
  • This will activate editing mode, indicated by a green checkmark next to the layer.

2. Edit Features

  • Add new features: Use the tools in the Digitizing Toolbar (e.g., "Add Point," "Add Line," "Add Polygon") to create new features on the map.
  • Modify existing features: Select a feature with the "Select Feature" tool, and then use the "Move Feature," "Rotate Feature," "Scale Feature," or "Vertex Edit" tools to make changes.
  • Delete features: Select the features you want to delete, and then click the "Delete Selected Features" button.

3. Edit Attributes

  • Open the Attribute Table: Right-click the layer in the Layers Panel and select "Open Attribute Table".
  • Edit values: Double-click on a cell in the table to edit its value.
  • Add new columns: Click the "Add Field" button to add new columns to the attribute table.

4. Save Edits

  • Once you've finished editing, click the "Save Edits" button in the toolbar to save your changes to the layer.
  • You can also save your changes directly in the attribute table by clicking the "Save" button.

5. Undo/Redo Edits

  • Use the "Undo" and "Redo" buttons in the toolbar to revert or reapply your edits.

6. Advanced Editing

  • Topology editing: Use the "Topology Editing" tools to create and maintain relationships between features, such as ensuring that polygons share common edges.
  • Snapping: Use the "Snapping" settings to ensure that features are precisely aligned with each other.
  • Advanced digitizing tools: Explore other digitizing tools like "Advanced Digitizing," "Split Features," "Merge Features," and "Geometry Tools" for more complex editing tasks.

By following these steps, you can effectively edit your layers in QGIS and create accurate and detailed geographic information.
