Do Tomato Seeds Need Light to Germinate?

Published in Gardening 1 min read

Tomato seeds do not need light to germinate. They actually prefer darkness!

Light can actually inhibit germination by interfering with the process of breaking down the seed coat.

Tomato seeds require warmth, moisture, and a good growing medium to sprout.

You can achieve optimal germination by planting the seeds in a seed starting tray filled with seed-starting mix, watering them thoroughly, and covering the tray with a clear plastic dome or humidity dome to create a warm, humid environment.

Keep the tray in a warm location, away from direct sunlight.

Once the seedlings emerge, you can gradually acclimate them to sunlight.
