Which Rocks Are Edible?

While some rocks might look appealing, most rocks are not edible.

Rocks are made up of minerals, which are inorganic substances. Our bodies cannot digest these substances, and they can even be harmful.

There are a few exceptions, though:

  • Salt rocks: These are rocks that are primarily composed of halite, a mineral form of salt. They are often used as a source of salt for cooking and other purposes.
  • Calcium-rich rocks: Some rocks contain calcium carbonate, which is the main ingredient in chalk. While not a primary food source, chalk is sometimes consumed for its calcium content, although this practice is not recommended due to potential health risks.

It's important to remember that even edible rocks should be consumed in moderation and only after careful preparation. Eating rocks can lead to digestive problems, mineral imbalances, and even choking hazards.
